CIVIL RIGHTS AND COMPLIANCE OFFICE
The mission of the District Civil Rights and Compliance Office is to ensure that students attend school in a safe, secure, and hostile-free learning environment and that all students are afforded equitable access to all the District’s educational programs, activities, and services.
The District Civil Rights and Compliance Office investigates claims of discrimination, harassment (including sexual harassment), bullying, intimidation, and retaliation, and claims of noncompliance in the District’s programs, activities, and services.
District’s Title IX Coordinator and Compliance Officer, Jasmina Viteskic, holds office hours at BHS two days a week.

- Students have the right to equal learning opportunities in their schools.
- Students may not be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to harassment or other forms of discrimination on the basis of sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression in any program or activity.
- Schools must students of all genders equal opportunities to play sports.
- Equipment and supplies, game and practice schedules, budgets, coaching travel allowances, facilities, publicity, support services, and tutoring offered to teams are to be equivalent between male and female teams.
- Students have the right to participate in school programs and activities and use facilities consistent with their gender identity.
- Pregnant and parenting students have the same right as any other student to continue in their regular school and in any program for which they qualify.
- Students have the right to have access to a Title IX Coordinator to answer questions regarding gender equity laws, discrimination or the complaint process.
- Students have the right to know and understand your school’s sexual misconduct policies. BUSD policies can be found here.
- Students affected by sexual harassment have a right to access supportive measures regardless of whether or not they want to pursue a grievance process.
- Students have the right to file a complaint with the District Civil Rights and Compliance Office if they believe they have been discriminated against or if they believe they have received unequal treatment on the basis of their sex.
- Students have a right to have their complaints investigated in a fair and timely manner.
- Students have the right to be protected against retaliation if they filed a complaint or are a party in the complaint process.
Supportive measures are reasonably available non-disciplinary, non-punitive, individualized services to restore or preserve equal access to education, protect student and employee safety, or deter sexual harassment. Supportive measures are equally available to complainants and respondents.
Supportive measures are available even if a student does not wish to initiate or participate in a grievance process. Supportive measures include:
- Academic Flexibility
- Attendance Support
- Class Schedule Changes
- Referral to Resources
- No Contact Directives
- Coordination of Criminal Reporting
