SOI’s 16th Annual Arctic Expedition:
July 21 to August 5, 2016
The 16th annual Students on Ice Arctic Expedition will be a profound hands-on experience for youth to expand their knowledge of the changing circumpolar world, foster a new understanding and respect for the planet, and gain the inspiration and motivation needed to help lead us to a healthy and sustainable future.
The 2016 Arctic Expedition begins this year in Canada’s capital city, Ottawa. After a few days of pre-expedition activities, we fly to Kuujjuaq, Québec to board our expedition vessel and set sail. En route, we will explore the communities, coasts, fiords, bays, and islands of Nunavik, Baffin Island, and the western coast of Greenland. Our expedition will end in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland where we will board our charter flights back to Ottawa.
Activities will include wildlife encounters, visits to remote Arctic communities, as well as the opportunity to acquire first-hand knowledge and insight into the dynamics of climate change, traditional Inuit knowledge, scientific research, policy, and other important Arctic and global issues.
The expedition will involve 120 youth from around the world along with a team of world-class scientists, Inuit Elders, educators, artists, musicians, CEO’s, dignitaries, journalists, authors, and innovators. Students will develop a deeper connection to nature and the inspiration, education and motivation to become leaders in their community and beyond. For more information, visit the Students on Ice website.
We are thrilled to announce that thanks to the generous support of our many partners and supporters, numerous scholarships are available for interested youth. Details and instructions are now online! Please note that the deadline for scholarship applications is March 11, 2016.
